Edwin Sanchez has lots of connections to Connecticut theater. He attended the Yale School of Drama in the early 1990s. Two of his plays, “Clean” and “Diosa,” had their premieres at Hartford Stage. He’s one of the playwrights who contributed one-act comedies to “Christmas on the Rocks” — his featured Clara from “The Nutcracker.”

Sanchez was born in Puerto Rico. When he felt compelled to do something to help the relief effort there following Hurricane Maria, he turned to some of his Connecticut theater pals.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. there’s a benefit reading of Edwin Sanchez’s play “The Merit System,” which is about a “young Puerto Rican man on the way up” who is “struggling with the cost of assimilation.”

Sanchez will direct the reading at the Mark Twain House & Museum. The community-conscious HartBeat Ensemble is producing it. Hartford playwright Jacques Lamarre is helping promote it. Local actors (yet to be announced) will appear in it.

THE MERIT SYSTEM will be read in the Lincoln Financial Auditorium of the Mark Twain House & Museum, 351 Farmington Ave., Hartford. Tickets are $20. All proceeds will go to United4PuertoRico. 860-247-0998, marktwainhouse.org.
